1934 - 2024
OBITUARY
William Hanrahan, age 90, of New Hyde Park, New York passed away on Tuesday August 6th, 2024.
He was born in Moyvane, Co. Kerry, Ireland in 1934 to Mary Ellen and Thomas Hanrahan. At the age of 19 he went to go work in England, then onto Canada before settling in New York. He worked in various forms of construction throughout his life.
He married Bridget McKiernan in April of 1969. They met at a dance in the Bronx and went on to have a full, wonderful, and happy marriage until her passing in January 2006. William was a man of many names. Bridget, deciding she preferred his middle name, Christopher, called him Chris throughout their life together. His side of the family called him Billy. And to his grandchildren, he was Grandpa.
Loving and devoted, William is survived by his daughter Kathleen, her husband Ray Mirza and their three children—Laith, Asher and Kaden—of Manhattan; his son Kiernan, his wife Katie and their three children—Liam, Doran and Kellen—of Garden City; and his daughter Kerry Ann, her husband John Kessler and their son—John John—of New Hyde Park.
He is also survived by his brothers Den and Brendan and sister Mary. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Helen, Con and Tom. He was also adored by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
William lived independently and attended church almost daily. He mowed his own lawn even through his last weeks. His calling card was Starburst candies, along with a loving pinch on the arm or back, which he would give to each of his beloved grandchildren every time he saw them. William always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. He loved Ireland and cherished hearing from his relatives who still live there. He was the family’s lucky Leprechaun who loved nickel slot machines and scratch off lotto tickets.
He could fix everything, and in another life, William could have been a master engineer. Faced with any broken appliance (including cars), he would diagnose the problem and find a solution. He once crafted from scratch an automatic watering system for hanging porch plants. Speaking of greens, William discovered and loved kale long before it became a worldwide phenomenon.
