1927 - 2025

OBITUARY

Sheila Leidl passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2025. She is predeceased by Rudy, her beloved husband of 47 years, her parents, Jack and Marion Delaney, and her brother, Jack. Born in Newry, Ireland, in 1927 and raised in Maspeth, Queens, New York. Sheila was always proud of her Irish heritage and celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with her famous Irish Soda Bread, enjoyed by family and friends. In 1953, she and the family moved to New Hyde Park to a home that she loved and where she and Rudy raised their four children. A devout Catholic, she attended Mass at Notre Dame Church, was a longtime member of the Rosary Society, and was active in preparing meals for the homeless. She and Rudy ensured that all four children received excellent educations at Notre Dame Elementary School and then Catholic high schools and Catholic colleges.

Sheila was an avid reader and, once her children were older, she joined the staff of the New Hyde Park Public Library, where she served for fifteen years, helping adults and children navigate the world of books and always with a smile. She was a wonderful hostess for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, bringing together the extended family for a day of feasting and sharing, and preparing delicious Irish, Austrian, Italian, and Chinese meals for her family as well as mastering the world of desserts. She and her husband Rudy enjoyed their travels together and she cherished spending time with her family at the annual Bethany Beach vacations. Sheila loved her wonderful neighbors and friends, including those in her Crocheting Group and the New Hyde Park Leisure Club.

Sheila was a loving and giving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, always remembering everyone’s birthday, even in her last days. Her life was a testament to love, selflessness, and caring for others and she will long be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and smile.

Sheila is survived by her four children, Rudy (and Mary Lynn), Rich (and Amelia Duroska), Randy (and Coco), and Maureen (and Dennis Fisher), her daughter-in-law, Josephine (and Gary Mazur), her fourteen grandchildren, Daniel, Erin, Melissa, Matt, John, Rob, Kaitlyn, Connor, Danny, Bethany, Michael, Mya, Randy, and Milan, and, Kevin and Jessica, and her eight great grandchildren, Holden, Cormac, Parker, Logan, Callum, Nathan, Griffin, and Jack Roman, and her brother, Brian Delaney, his children, Dorothy and Tim and their families and her many nieces and nephews.

She lived a life of love, family, and faith and joins her beloved husband, Rudy. May she rest in peace with the Lord.

Funeral services are being provided by New Hyde Park Funeral Home. Donations in Sheila’s honor may be made to Notre Dame Church in New Hyde Park, the Mineola Fire Department (Att: Gary Mazur), or Memorial Sloan Kettering.
