1928 - 2022
OBITUARY
Rosina Rottura (nee Catania) passed peacefully at her home on Thursday, March 10, 2022.
Rosina was born April 25, 1928 in Dasa, Calabria (Catanzaro) to Mariangela Ganino and Domenico Catania. In Dasa, she enjoyed growing up with her beloved brothers: Giuseppe, Nicola, and Gino. On September 14, 1947, Rose married Francesco Rottura, and they immigrated to New York in 1955, eventually becoming United States citizens in 1963.
Rose possessed an uncanny ability to tell stories about her humble beginnings helping raise her brothers in a remote town in Italy. Soon after arriving in New York, Francesco suffered a workplace injury which forced Rose to assume the role of provider, and she worked tirelessly for many years as a seamstress to care for her family. Her determination and steadfastness during these difficult times served as a source of strength and inspiration to her family.
Rose was happiest during her many years in Floral Park when her home overflowed with family, friends, and food. She amazed everyone with her ability to cook everything from scratch without consulting a recipe. Holidays centered around spending time together while eating and drinking for hours on end.
Rose was the beloved mother of Pepe Rottura (Sue), Angela Rottura, Rosanna Schlefman (Alan), and Romolo Rottura (Amy). Rose, or Nonna as she was affectionately known to her family, was adored and cherished by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren include Jennifer Stetson (Tom), Jamie Rottura, Renee Ascencio, Timmy McGoey (Irina), Amanda Schlefman, Cara Schlefman, Jenna Schlefman, Dominic Rottura, Matteo Rottura, and Dante Rottura. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren Adrianna, Sophia, Toby, Patrick, Ellis, and Emaleen. Rose is predeceased by her husband Francesco, her brother Giuseppe, and her granddaughter Janet.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm on Thursday, March 17, 2022, at New Hyde Park Funeral Home, 506 Lakeville Rd, New Hyde Park, New York. The funeral mass will be held Friday, March 18 at 9:45 am at Our Lady of the Snows Church, 258-15 80th Avenue, Floral Park, NY. Entombment will follow in Mt. Saint Mary’s Cemetery.
