1946 - 2025

OBITUARY

Dr. Robert Kevin Eschenauer, 78, passed away on April 10, 2025, in Queens, New York, the city where he was also born on December 23, 1946. A devoted educator and lifelong learner, Robert’s life was marked by a deep commitment to family and knowledge.

Robert pursued his academic journey with distinction, earning both his MS and PhD from St. John's University after completing undergraduate studies at St. Francis College. He earned a Post Graduate Training Diploma in Hypnosis and Psychotherapy through NYSEPH, and an Advanced Certificate in School Psychology from City College of CUNY. His dedication to education extended far beyond personal achievement; he was a passionate teacher who inspired countless students throughout his career. Known as Dr. E or Dr. Bob, he held his students to a high standard because he believed in their ability.  He served as an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Counselor Education and taught in both the counseling and special education programs at St. John’s University.  In addition to his work at St. John’s, he worked for 35 years with the New York City Department of Education and wore many hats including special education teacher, educational evaluator, educational evaluator trainer, Assistant Clinical Administrator of the Brooklyn West Region, and finally, school psychologist.  He also served as an adjunct professor at Iona College where he taught in both the Family Counseling Program and psychology departments.  He worked as an adjunct professor at Brooklyn College and taught in the graduate programs of both literacy and special education.  He served as a full-time assistant professor at Lehman College of the City University of New York.  In addition to his teaching career, he maintained a private counseling practice for 33 years. Known for his unmatched work ethic, Robert approached every endeavor with integrity and determination.

Robert is lovingly remembered by his wife, Celestina Marte-Eschenauer; daughters Jennifer Travers (Peter), Christine Eschenauer, Rebecca McClintock (David), and Nancy Parker (Scott); stepchildren Jasmine Liriano (David), Jason Reid (Jessica Diaz), and Justina Reid (Xavier Machado). He was a proud grandfather, affectionately known as Gpa, to Fiona, Peter, Madeline, Katherine, Celis, Maylee, Zachary, Zander, Masen, and Madisen. Robert is also survived by his brother Paul Eschenauer (Donna) and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Adeline Eschenauer, and his sister Joan Ergen.

Robert’s faith was an important aspect of his life and even when he could no longer speak, he could be seen mouthing the words of the Rosary.  He was his own harshest critic and often struggled to accept how loved he was by those who knew him.

Robert faced his diagnosis of ALS with courage and focused more on those who loved him than the swift progression of his disease.   His family would like to thank the Palliative Care Team at New York Presbyterian-Queens Hospital, Dr. Simona Treidler, and the caregivers at MJHS Hospice.

Robert’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched as an educator and friend. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew them. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the ALS Association.

I just received the news through a school counselor who I met at an end of the year party. I always think about Dr. Bob and wondered how he was doing.. He was my professor 25 years ago at St. Johns University. Because of him, I got a School Counselor job after I graduated. I ended up woking with him for a year in East New York until he retired as a School Psychologist. SIP I'm glad you are no longer in pain.

It is with deep sadness and immense gratitude that I remember Dr. Robert K. Eschenauer, a beloved professor, mentor, and guiding light during my time at St. John's University. As part of the first cohort to attend the Mental Health Counseling program he so passionately spearheaded, I had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the vision, dedication, and heart he poured into building something truly meaningful.

Dr. Eschenauer was more than an educator, he was a leader and a kind soul whose compassion and wisdom left a lasting imprint. He went out of his way for me more times than I can count, offering not only academic guidance but genuine care and support. His mentorship shaped my professional path and deepened…

I just returned from South Africa and I am deeply saddened and heartbroken to hear of the passing of Dr. E. Receiving this news has been devastating, and it is truly a profound loss for all of us who had the honor of knowing him.

Dr. Eschenauer was more than just my Program Director during my Master's studies at St. John's University; he was my professor, mentor, and a steadfast advocate. I am deeply grateful that he looked beyond the transcript on his desk and took the time to discover the individual behind the file. Thank you, Dr. Eschenauer, for pushing me, for helping me see that having a disability is not a limitation, and for teaching me how to…

I am so saddened to hear this news. Dr. E was a gem and one of my biggest mentors and supporters as I became a therapist. As a GA in the counseling department, I was lucky to have had a chance to know him outside of the classroom. He had a sarcastic wit, was generous with his time and wisdom, encouraging and proud of my endeavors, and always wanted to hear how I was doing. For years after graduation we kept in touch. I count him as one of the main reasons I finished school with the confidence to follow my path. I will miss our lunches at Tavern 18 and The Pike... Rest in peace Dr. E. Sending Tina…

I'm so sorry to hear this news. Dr. E had a powerful impact on both my career and personal growth. Working as the department's GA was a turning point in my lifeí¢â'¬"an opportunity I'll always be grateful for. Dr. E's mix of kindness, insight, and sharp humor pulled me in and made me want to learn more. He helped me believe in myself and face the world with confidence and courage. His faith in me and steady encouragement continue to shape my journey. I'm grateful I had the opportunity to reconnect with him in recent years. He was a true mentor, and I'll always be grateful for the role he played in my life.
