OBITUARY
It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Philomena O'Shea (nee Walsh) who passed away on July 22, 2026 at 92yrs.
Philomena was born on Sept 18,1933 to Molly and Michael Walsh on a dairy farm in Greenhill, Mourne Abbey, County Cork, Ireland. She emigrated at 19 from Cobh, County Cork in 1952 to settle in Yorkville, N.Y.C. She would go on to marry her beloved husband, of 41 years, Denis Joseph O'Shea, also from Mourne Abbey in 1961 at St. Monica's Church in Manhattan.
Philomena lived a life centered on faith and love. A long time parishioner of Notre Dame Church, her life was a reflection of her faith and she inspired all of us by the example she set each day. She was a devoted mother and homemaker, dedicated entirely to her Family. Their home in Fresh Meadows was the hub for news from Ireland, many holidays, celebrations, and Sunday dinners. She instilled her love of Ireland and made sure her children remained connected to her birthplace and heritage. Philomena was a gracious and welcoming host who touched the lives of so many through her kindness, generosity, good humor and delicious meals.
She is survived by her children, Philip, (Elizabeth), Michael, Maureen Deery (Michael), Sean (Gretchen). Grandchildren, Sean, Tara, Alannah, Catriona, Brendan, Liam, Brian, Patrick and Molly. Her siblings Maureen Russell, and Michael Walsh, and Sister-in-Law, Una Walsh. Preceded in death by her husband, Denis, siblings Catherine Kilroy, (Thomas), Thomas Walsh, (Theresa), Patrick Walsh, Eily May Walsh, brother-in law Bill Russell and nephews Tommy Kilroy, and Kevin Russell. I was so sad to hear of Philomena’s passing. I was lucky to have spent some time with her and Dennis when I stayed in New York. She made me feel at home and took me under her wing and I will always cherish that time. It was lovely that we got the chance to meet again in 2014 and for her to meet my oldest daughter. Sincerest condolences to Sean, Maureen, Michael and Philip and all her grandchildren. Best wishes to Maureen , Michael and Una and all the cousins at this sad time. Rest in Peace. Love Carmel, Meabh & Eabha.
