1939 - 2024

OBITUARY

Norma Maria Diem (1939-2024):  Norma Maria Diem (née Thorell) entered into eternal rest on Friday, February 9, 2024. She was 84 years old.

Norma was born on March 17, 1939, in Brooklyn, NY, the middle daughter of the late Hilding and Elin Thorell. She was educated at Sewanhaka High School. On November 27, 1966, she married the late George Diem, who predeceased  Norma on February 5, 2017. They shared a great love for each other during their 50 years of marriage.

For the last 6 years, Norma had been living at Wesley Nursing Home in Saratoga Springs, NY. During that time, she touched many lives with her feisty spirit, sharing her comedic wit and laughter with everyone she encountered.

She lived most of her life in New Hyde Park, NY where she lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures, raising her two sons, working as a hairdresser, enjoying time with her family  and long-time friends, and traveling to Florida with George in their retirement years.

Norma loved her family and friends, the beach, music (especially Billy Joel, Bobby Darin and Barry Manilow), the New York Islanders, Eddie’s pizza, a good bargain, and laughter. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.

She is survived by her sisters, Yvonne (Jim) Eaton and Linnea (Mike) Shuping; her sons, Michael Diem and his wife, Karen, Eric Diem, and his wife Kara, and her four beloved grandchildren from eldest to youngest, Madalena, Kathryn, Georgia, and Tyler.

Family and friends will gather on Friday, February 16 from 4 to 8 pm at New Hyde Park Funeral Home, 506 Lakeville Road, New Hyde Park, NY.  A brief remembrance will take place on Saturday, February 17 at 10 am at the funeral home, with burial to immediately follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park.  All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to ALS United of Greater New York or The Community Hospice Foundation.

For our dear Norma - The many years of your friendship have been so very special, that is because you have been special from the moment we met almost 60 years ago. The dinners with you and George, the movies we shared, so many laughs and best of all the love. We are blessed to know you and so very thankful that the last visit with you this past December was oh so gratifying. To see you laugh again and to hear you share the good memories were the best Christmas present ever. Please give George a big hug and kiss from us both and please rest in peace with the hope that we will meet again. Our love and…
