1939 - 2026

OBITUARY

Michael Franklin Clarke, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, was born in Trinidad on March 28, 1939—the first child of Rita and Albert Clarke. He shared over 50 years of marriage with his wife, Susan, and was a devoted father to Marcia, Denise, Nadine, and Adrian.

From an early age, Michael’s kindness and compassion were evident. His mother often recalled how, even as a young boy, he would quietly care for her—laundering clothes and making tea and soup, especially after the birth of his younger siblings. Loving as he was, he also had a firm, guiding nature, particularly with his sisters, reminding them to turn down their socks and brush back their bangs. Michael was tenderhearted and loyal, building deep and enduring friendships—many of which lasted a lifetime.

Michael developed a wide range of interests, but photography became his greatest passion and calling. He refined his craft at Trinidad and Tobago Television, where his talent was quickly recognized. After moving to Canada for work, he later had the opportunity to work at Time Life magazine in New York City, further sharpening his skills. His career eventually led him to the United Nations (UNICEF), where he worked in film production and editing. Through this work, he traveled extensively across the globe, documenting people, cultures, and communities with skill, care, and an artist’s eye. His assignments brought him into remarkable settings and among notable world figures, reflecting both the trust placed in him and the excellence of his craft. Committed to continual learning, he pursued studies at both New York University and the New York Institute of Photography.

Michael later retired in 1999. In the years that followed, he and Susan spent time living in France before returning to New York. Retirement did not slow his creative spirit—he continued to travel and create.

He will be deeply missed by his wife, Susan; his children, Marcia, Denise, Nadine, and Adrian; his grandchildren, Andre, Alisha, Xavier, Amanda, Maxwell, and Aaden; his great-grandson, Asreal; his siblings, Vanrick, Judith and Gail; his sons-in-law, Fernando, Andre, and Lennox (late); and his daughter-in-law, Maya. He leaves behind his nieces and nephews, Lisa, Nicole, Candice, Michael, Travis, Tanya, Almaz, and Tsehay; treasured extended family; and beloved friends, including Rene Serrette, The Langtons, and many others—along with many great-nieces and great-nephews.

May his soul be perpetually surrounded by God’s light, and may his memory be a blessing forever.

I remember Mama showing me the photos you had taken and telling me about your love of photography and the kind of person you were growing up. I always carried the warmest impression of you through her stories, and I saw them come to life during your visits when you asked about our lives, offered unwavering support, and encouraged us as we navigated our own lives. Thank you for your kindness and the love you gave our family.

To my family in mourning, may our thoughts, prayers, and blessings guide us through this difficult time. With Uncle Michael now at peace, may we carry his love forward, living lives he would be proud of and continuing the story we'll one…

To Auntie Susan, Marcia, Denise, Nadine, Uncle Van, Auntie Gail and Mommy (Judith) my heart and prayers are with you all.

Some of my dearest and youngest memories of Uncle Michael is of his gentle quiet spirit. He taught me how to iron a gentleman's dress shirt. Took me to the Poconos for quiet escapes out of the city.

Lisa and I shared a special moment as we bumped into him in the SoHo area of NYC as while he was out with his buddy snapping photos as they walked. I can't tell you how wonderful of a surprise that was for me!

I wish I could have spent more time with him hearing his stories from his early years…
