Mary T. Bergin

1/6/1924 - 6/8/2020

OBITUARY

Mary O'Donohue Bergin of Brooklyn, NY passed away peacefully at home on June 8, 2020 at the age of 96. Mary was one of ten children born to immigrant parents Michael O'Donohue and Mary Leonard on January 6, 1924 in New York City. Although she was born into a large family she was never meant to blend in. With a personality larger than life and a sense of humor to match, she caught the eye of Billy Bergin. She awaited his return from Europe in World War II and they quickly rekindled their love. Soon after, they were married and lived a simple and honest life together in Brooklyn, NY where they welcomed four children. Over the years her family grew as her children made her a grandmother and Nana was born. Though she faced many hardships throughout her life, which included the loss of her husband and eldest daughter, you would be hard-pressed to find any complaints from her. Mary was the matriarch of not only her immediate family but countless others who she quickly accepted and loved as her own. She had a remarkable way of making you feel like family after just meeting. Mary had an incredible memory that could recount minute details of her childhood. She relished in the opportunity to retell adventures of her life over a cup of tea with her children and grandchildren. Those moments are some of their most cherished memories and those stories will be retold for generations to come. There was a magic to Mary that made you feel like she might outlive us all. Her zest for life was contagious to anyone who had the good fortune to meet her. She lived her life without complaint, showing love and kindness to all. Mary was truly one of a kind and the world doesn't seem as bright without her. It is an impossible task to put into words the impact Mary left on this earth. We can only dream and strive to live our lives as she did. A life that was full of love, laughter and of course her nightly glass of port wine. She would never say goodbye when leaving, she preferred instead “so long for now.” So here we are Nana, and it's not goodbye but so long for now, until we meet again. Mary is predeceased by her husband William, daughter Geraldine and daughter-in-law Karen. She will be greatly missed by her loving children Kenneth Bergin, Eileen Carr (William Carr), Maureen O'Keefe (Stephen O'Keefe), her ten grandchildren Sgt. William Bergin (Emily) Sean Bergin (Katie) William Carr (Cait Barry) Jessica Bergin, Kristin Carr, Kaylee Bergin, Elizabeth Carr, Capt. Thomas O'Keefe, Lauren O'Keefe and Tara O'Keefe, as well as 6 great grandchildren: Camryn, Brooklyn, Benjamin, Kennedy, Bryson and Maggie. Mary was a life member of the VFW and past Vice-President and Treasurer of the Mega-Christie post. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. INTERMENT
