1924 - 2022
OBITUARY
Josephine Schimmenti was born in 1924 to immigrant parents from Palermo, Sicily. She lived in Brooklyn, NY where she attended grammar school and graduated High School. She loved to play ball, enjoyed her many friends, and loved to dance. She married Joe in 1947. They were married for 66 years. Joe passed away in 2013. They moved to Maspeth after they were married. She worked in retail for years in Manhattan, working in Millinery for Oppenheim Collins. Joe and Josie loved to spend time with family, having gatherings often, spending time in Beaver Lake and East Hampton. They loved to play golf, go to clubs, go out dancing, see the bands of that era, go to Las Vegas where they saw all the best entertainment, go to The Glenwood Hotel, and Atlantic City (Josie loved the slots and Joe loved the horses.) Josie had wonderful groups of friends. The ladies had club every Tuesday night and once they saved their collected dues they would go out for dinner or take a girl’s trip to the country. She knew how to have a fun time.
She worked as a teacher’s aide for 27 years in Grover Cleveland and Queens Vocational; she loved every minute of it. I am sure most of you have heard her stories. She was some storyteller. Over the years the stories were repeated, but never changed.
She had a long, happy life until slowing down at 96 years. Now at almost 99, not many people can say that! I wish we could all raise a glass and celebrate this generous, gracious, special lady. You will truly be missed!!
May you rest in peace, JoJo.
