OBITUARY

John Peter Mastando Jr.

October 16, 1930 – August 3, 2025

John Peter Mastando Jr., 94, of Flushing, NY, passed away on Sunday, August 3, 2025. Born on October 16, 1930, in East Harlem, NY, he was the beloved eldest son of the late John Peter Mastando Sr. and Minnie Mastando.

John’s greatest joy in life was his family. He cherished summers at the Sands Beach Club, where he made lasting memories with his children and grandchildren. Whether basking in the sun with his beloved wife Phyllis by his side, listening to his favorite radio programs, or playing racquetball, bingo, gin rummy, or Scrabble, John always brought warmth, laughter, and love to every moment.

John was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees — he followed the team faithfully and watched the games right up until the end. He also had a deep appreciation for the Rat Pack, especially Frank Sinatra, whose music often played in the background during family gatherings and quiet afternoons. One memory he cherished was having Sammy Davis Jr. perform at his wedding — a moment he remembered with great joy.

Known for his gentle spirit and generous heart, he was especially adored by his grandchildren. He always found a way to slip them a few dollars and a piece of Juicy Fruit gum, and share a warm smile. His kindness, sweetness, and unwavering positivity left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

John is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Phyllis C. Mastando; his five children, Elaine, Frank (Emily), Christina (Paul), Catherine (Victor), and John III (Maria); and his nine grandchildren, Jacqueline, Gianna, Anthony, John IV, Michael, Marissa, Victoria, Peter, and Andrew.

John’s legacy of love, laughter, and devotion to family will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
