OBITUARY

Jon Leong

May 9, 1949 - March 19, 2026, age 76

Jon Leong was born in Minnesota. Jon and his mother relocated to NYC when Jon was a child. There Jon’s mother met her second husband and brother Marty was born. The new parents raised the family in Woodside, New York.

Following graduation from Newtown High School, Jon attended Queens College, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science. It was there that Jon met his future wife, Betty. Jon was hired at Queens College as a Computer Programmer. After years of hard work, he was then promoted to Night Manager of the Queens College Computer Center. He worked there until his retirement in the 2000s.

In his earlier days, Jon liked to keep physically active by playing tennis, swimming, earning his 1st degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do Karate. Jon also enjoyed biking with family and friends from Queens to different parts of Long Island. One bike trip went as far as Montauk Point.

Jon and Betty married in 1974. They purchased their first home in Flushing, Queens. In 1994, the couple adopted their daughter April in China. The family then moved to New Hyde Park.

An avid music collector, Jon's music tastes ranged from Jazz, Rock and Brazilian music.

In his later years, Jon liked building and repairing computers for many of his friends. He would also share audio and video media with everyone as well.

Jon was a caring and generous individual. He will be missed by all who knew him. Rest in peace.

I know John from our Chinese adoption group which formed over 30 years ago when we traveled to China together to adopt our daughters. We made the conscious decision at that time to treat the girls as if they were actually cousins. This led to 30 plus years of having John, Betty and April as part of our extended family. Our families enjoyed years of delightful trips, meals and all manner of celebrations.

John was steady as a rock with our raucous group for all those years. He was patient and kind with all the girls - and was more than happy to spend time with the girls, showering them with copies of all the latest movies. He enjoyed video…

Jon was such a wonderful father figure in the China Cousins crew. So thoughtful, generous, and kind. To this day my associations with so many movies are because Jon gave us DVD copies during ski trips or Chinese New Year celebrations. I know he will be missed!

I remember meeting John a few months ago while visiting Betty by her hospital bedside. A few weeks later John and April would be in Port Washington during the inaugural dragonboat race. It was a sunny day as they walked the venue greeting many people including our club members. We are thankful to have had the opportunity to meet Betty's husband and greet our former youth member, April.

Both, Betty and John, lived productive lives doing what they enjoyed doing.

Rest in Peace
