OBITUARY
John Edward Hassell, 87, of Stewart Manor, New York entered into heaven in the loving presence of his wife and daughter on May 22, 2025. John Edward was born on October 7, 1937, in Barbados, West Indies and was a loving and devoted husband to Susan and a dedicated and perfect father to Elizabeth, Gretchen and Caroline. He was also the proud grandfather of Wade, Grace, Jesse, Violet, Jillian, Stella, and Jackson, who will miss his humor, light heartedness and immense kindness.
Dad was easy-going, the life of the party and also hard-working and dedicated. He spent over thirty years working as a mechanical engineer at IBM where he was known for his superior math skills and for being the social butterfly of the office. He brought his children to work in the city at Penn Plaza where hot bagels were the highlight of the visit. Despite his many responsibilities, he always made time for every single person in his orbit. He was truly loved by everyone, and he loved them back. He spent countless hours transporting children and families in need to the Shriner's Children's Hospital in Philadelphia which gave him purpose and pride after he retired. Our dad was also a volunteer firefighter and served as an usher and altar server well into his sixties in Bellerose Village, where he resided with his family for over twenty years.
Dad loved to dance, sing, jog, eat (especially hot dogs and ice cream) and loved a nice glass of red wine. He loved to entertain and invite siblings, children, cousins and friends to his Southold house where mayhem ensued. We honor the man he was and remember him for his joviality and warmth. He was the best father a daughter could have and often noted he was meant to be the father of daughters since he hated sports and TV. He left an indelible mark on all who knew him, and our lives are forever changed for knowing him. He deserves to have his long years of fatherly love honored.
To our mother, he was just everything. After 59 years of marriage, he loved her more with each moment. Their love will endure as an example to their three children, seven grandchildren and many many nieces and nephews who saw them as "extra parents." His love for mom was so unique that it is hard to describe. His love for her and for his family was something he shared so easily that it was almost boastful.
He is survived by his wife and children but also the many friends and extended family members who will miss him dearly. We find comfort in knowing that Dad's legacy lives on through the lessons he taught us, the love he shared, and the memories we will cherish forever.
