OBITUARY
Jimmie Chin was born on November 7, 1933 in Chinatown, NY and graduated from Haaran High School in 1953 and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1956, as an Aerospace Engineer. He received his MS in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Southern California in 1959 and his MBA from St John’s University, NY in 1986. Jimmie married the love of his life, Helen Tom, in 1961 at True Light Lutheran Church in Chinatown, NY. They lived in Flushing, Queens after they married and Sheri was born in 1963 and Darin in 1965.
Upon graduation from MIT, Jimmie worked at Northrop in California. He returned to NY in 1959 to work at Republic Aviation and at Grumman Aerospace in 1966. At Northrop/Grumman, he worked on many of Grumman's/NGC's aircraft programs including but not limited to: the F-14 Tomcat, X-29 Forward Swept Wing (FSW), E-2 Hawkeye, C-2 Greyhound and quite a few Advanced Systems/Preliminary Design efforts. His expertise was predominantly in the areas of aircraft flying qualities/flight mechanics, carrier suitability and automatic flight controls. He rose to the rank of Group Head and Principal Engineer (Engineer 6 in the current ranking system). Jimmie loved his work so much, he claimed he never worked a day in his life!
In August 2011, Jimmie was honored by Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano during a ceremony at Nassau County’s Chinese American Night as an Aerospace Principal Engineer whose expertise helped win millions in contracts for Long Island, building Grumman’s F-14 Tomcat Fighter and the X-29 Forward Swept Wing Jet.
After a successful career of 57 years, Jimmie retired in October 2013 at 80. In retirement, Jimmie enjoyed spending time traveling the world with his family and friends. He loved watching New York City sport teams and a variety of documentaries on TV. Jimmie enjoyed practicing Tai Chi and keeping in touch with his retired Grumman buddies.
Jimmie’s family feels incredibly lucky to have enjoyed his long life with him and will remember him as an incredibly smart, adoring and beloved family man. Jimmie is greatly missed and is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Helen Chin; son and his spouse; Darin and Nancy Chin; son-in-law, Gordon Ng; and grandchildren; Alexandra Ng, Marcus Ng, Catherine Chin and Rebecca Chin. Jimmie is predeceased by his mother and father, Harry Chin and Helen Ng; his sisters, Doris Eng and Nancy Leong; his daughter Sheri Chin and his granddaughter Renee Chin.
