To the Grossi Family,

Please accept my condolences on the passing of Jeanette. I had no idea she was deceased until I tried calling her this afternoon. She was my father's (Nick Sassone) first cousin and we were all very fond of Jeanette and her sister Anne. I spoke with her about a year ago and she seemed to be doing ok. I also spoke with her daughter. Please take solice in the fact that she is at peace in Heaven.

Love,

Nick Sassone

I have known Lorraine Grossi since I was 2 years old, and because of that, I have had the privilege of knowing her mother, Jeannette for nearly my entire life. I grew up across the street from the Grossi family and as an only child I was always fascinated - and a bit envious - of the chaos that came from a house with four sisters.

Lorraine's mother was a warm, steady presence through so many childhood memories and I will always remember her with fondness. Her passing saddened me. Even though she had lived a long life and was ready for peace after her suffering, losing a mother is never easy - my heart goes out to you.

Jeannette was my cousin; we were grandchildren of Roc-Antonio and Giovanna Franciosa, who came to America from Italy in the late 19th/early 20th century. They settled in East Harlem, where they raised a small - 14 children - but wonderfully warm Italian family in a brownstone on 118th Street between 1st and Pleasant Avenues. The house was esthetically pleasing both inside and out; the first floor was situated a few steps below street level and, as we stepped down through the front door, we were greeted by a beautiful brass and marble staircase in the hallway, Italian tiles on the kitchen floor and walls, along with a molded tin ceiling, and a large window near the kitchen sink that at…

I first met Jeannette about 18 years ago when I began to volunteer at St. Ignatius Human Services in Hicksville. Jeannette volunteered with a wonderful group of women on Thursday afternoons. Back then the group consisted of Joan Bickard, Muriel Arvidson, Marie Mancini, Annette Ferro and Jeannette. They were a very special group of ladies. As the years passed I came to love Jeannette. She was so soft-spoken and kind to everyone. I was fortunate to be able to travel and as we came to know each other more Jeannette would give me a little something, perhaps a little accessory bag, to use on my trip. I recall a few times she would grab my hand and put a…

My cousin Jeanette

There was an age disparity of about 27 yrs so as a young kid I always called her aunt Jeannette.

I spent most of my summers at 118th st as a child with aunt ida and I remember aunt Lucy lived on the top floor.

Aunt ida lived on the 2nd floor and uncle Mikey and uncle Joey on the 3rd floor.

A lot of wonderful family were in and out of that house and Jeanette was one of them.

She was a sweetheart and I always remember her smiling and making me feel good about myself because she was so nice to me just like everyone else at 118th st.

Uncle Sonny and aunt Yolanda and…
