Hugh “Sonny” McElhennon passed away on August 1, 2026, at the age of 91. He was born on January 2, 1935 in Dessertmartin, County Derry, Northern Ireland, as the second of ten siblings. In 1958, he immigrated to New York City and soon after served in the United States Army. After his military service, he took a job as a New York City bus driver, where he would work until his retirement.
In 1964, he met his wife, Anne McGinley, and they were inseparable ever since, celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this past September. Hugh was the father of Stephen (Elaine), Theresa Collins (Vincent), and Maura Miller (Thomas). In 1978, Hugh moved to New Hyde Park, New York, with his family, where he lived for the remainder of his life.
Hugh was the grandfather of Anne (Matthew), Kathleen, Emma, Gavin, Aidan, Michael, Declan, and Desmond. His grandchildren cherished playing soccer or cards with their “Grandpa.” He was known and beloved for his quick wit, gentle nature, and quiet grace. He will be missed deeply by all lucky enough to have known and loved him.
