1933 - 2026

OBITUARY

Herbert “Herbie” Schwieger was a devoted husband, father, and Opi who has touched the lives of everyone he met. Herbie passed away peacefully at the age of 92, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family on January 24th, 2026.

Herbie was born on December 7, 1933, in Bremerhaven, Germany. At the age of 19, he boarded the SS United States with his mother, father, and sister, Marlis, beginning a new life in the United States. The family first settled in Brockton, Massachusetts, before later moving to Ridgewood, New York.

Shortly after, Herbie proudly served in the United States Army. He spent two years stationed in California, where he worked as a company carpenter, and was honorably discharged in August 1957. After completing his service, Herbie returned home and worked alongside his father in a shoe factory.

Back in Ridgewood, Herbie soon discovered that the love of his life was living just next door. One evening, Herbie and Elaine went out dancing. Watching her from across the room, Herbie gathered the courage to ask her to dance and from that moment on, the rest was history.

On May 6th, 1967, Herbie married his true love, Elaine. Shortly after their wedding, Herbie and Elaine welcomed their wonderful daughters Lisa and Eraina. Throughout their 58 beautiful years, Herbie and Elaine watched as their family grew. Herbie's daughter Lisa married Frank, and Eraina married Robert. In 1972, they purchased their first house together in Middle Village, New York where they continued to create memories with their growing family.

Years later, Herbie became a proud Opi to his three grandchildren: Meagan, Christina, and Tyler. As the years went by Herbie warmly welcomed his grandchildren's significant others Neal, Nick, and Amy into the family with open arms.

Herbie loved music, from singing his favorite German songs to playing the accordion for his family on Christmas Eve. He was also a semi-pro soccer player with Eintracht. Herbie had a great love for his aquarium, especially his favorite fish, clown loaches. He also had a love for gardening. Herbie and his wife, Elaine shared a love for traveling and spent many wonderful years exploring the world together. Together they enjoyed twenty-five cruises and went to Hawaii three times. Above all, Herbie was a joyful, silly man. His presence could light up a room. Anyone who met Herbie would never leave without a smile on their face. From his silly faces, jokes, and laughter, you can only imagine how happy he made everyone feel around him!

Please join us on Saturday, January 31st, 2026, as we gather to celebrate Herbie’s wonderful life and the joy he brought to so many.
