As a former member of the Sperry Athletic Club I was very sad to hear of the passing of George Erkmann. George was truly passionate about exercise, the many benefits it brings, and encouraging & helping people to get involved. He was also clever with Sperry management, who initially was not very keen about the Sperry Athletic Club, but George convinced them by helping to demonstrate quantitative evidence that employees who utilized the Athletic Club had less sick days and used less health benefits (Sperry Corp was self insured). Suffice it to say, management came around, and we all continued to benefit from the Athletic Club, largely thanks to George.
He was also a good teacher, and I know this…
I am sorry to hear of the passing of George Erkmann. I am a former Member of the Sperry Athletic Club. Like all our Members I benefited from his dedicated and inspired Leadership. George held a passionate belief in the value of exercise and fitness for all. His belief continues to inspire us and is a legacy he leaves behind that I hope will continue to endure.
Condolences to all his Family.
I was very saddened to hear of George's passing. He always worked hard at keeping the Sperry athletic club going and organizing all of the holiday parties and summer BBQs. He had a smile on his face and a kind word for everyone. He was truly a wonderful person. RIP George, till we meet again. Watch over us friends from above.
I just posted a message on A Sperry Facebook page about George when someone said he died earlier this month. Hard to believe. I mentioned that George always wanted our picnic on the longest day of the year. Then we would review the entire picnic afterwards to make it always better. I was the president of the women's gym for six years and it was a pleasure to serve with him. But, we also sat together. So, whenever a new 401k or health care program would come out, George made graphs. Eventually, I would just say, tell me what to do! I am sure his family is set but heartbroken, and my family is also. Regards to Maureen and fami…
George and I were close friends for 45 years, and we worked together as officers of the Sperry Men's Athletic Club for more than two decades. It was such a pleasure to work with him. In all that time, I cannot recall that we ever had a disagreement or a problem we could not resolve. Many have called George a role model, and I too regard him in that light. Underneath his natural warmth and cheerfulness there was an extraordinary resolve and a rigorous intellectual self-discipline. The following example stands out to me. After our awards dinners and other social events, George would put together a post-mortem report so that we would remember what happened and do even better next…
