OBITUARY
Elizabeth V. Hayes, known as Vicky to her family and friends, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2025, at the age of ninety-six. A longtime resident of Wall Township, NJ, Vicky’s life was defined by faith, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to caring for others. Born in Newtownhamilton, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, Vicky trained as a nurse in England before moving to Canada and later the United States. Her career as an emergency room nurse spanned many years, during which she brought calm, skill, and kindness to those in their most vulnerable moments. Even in retirement, her devotion to caregiving continued — she later worked at a local nursing home, offering comfort and dignity to residents. In 1959, she married Thomas E. Hayes, and together they built a loving home in Somerset County, NJ, where they raised their two daughters. Upon retirement, Vicky relocated to Wall Township, where she became an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Manasquan and volunteered for many years with the Visiting Nurse Association. She enjoyed reading, knitting, and walking — but most of all, giving her time to others. In her later years, Vicky moved to an assisted living facility on Long Island, where she was able to receive the same kind of care she had so generously given throughout her life. She faced illness in her final years with quiet courage, strength, and grace. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Mattei and husband Dan, and Nancy Mineo and husband Chris; and by her beloved grandchildren: Theresa, Monica, Daniel, Joseph, Matthew, and Michael. A funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Manasquan, 16 Virginia Avenue on Tuesday, July 1, at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Online Donations - St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
