OBITUARY
Elizabeth Ann McGowan Hegarty, 84, passed away on October 19, 2020. The proud daughter of immigrant parents from Ireland, the late Felix and Maura O’Sullivan McGowan. She was born in New York City on August 6, 1936 and grew up in New Rochelle, NY. She was a resident of Brightwaters NY, Bolton Landing NY, Edgewater NJ and Glen Ridge NJ. She was a retired school teacher having taught for more than 30 years. Elizabeth was a devoted special education teacher who loved her students and she was their number one cheerleader during Special Olympic events. Most of her years teaching were at the May Moore Elementary School in Deer Park, NY. When not working, Elizabeth loved to spend time in Lake George, New York with her family. Elizabeth was the loving wife of 58 years to her late husband, John Joseph Hegarty who passed away one year ago this month. Elizabeth was a loving mother to Mary Toomey (Jack), Timothy Hegarty (Katie), and John Hegarty (Kerri). She was also a devoted grandmother to nine grandchildren: Ryan Hegarty, Colleen Toomey, Elizabeth Hegarty, Andrew Hegarty, Michaela Toomey, Rachel Hegarty, John Toomey, Owen Hegarty, and Julia Hegarty. Elizabeth is predeceased by four brothers, Lawrence P., Felix J., Rev. Brother John F. (C.F.C.), Patrick V. and one sister, Mary Baxter. She is survived by two brother-in-law’s, Michael Hegarty (Anita), Chris Hegarty (Ann), sister-in-law Patty Tesauro (Dr. William, predeceased) and sister-in-law Maureen McGowan. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Services for Elizabeth will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Elizabeth’s name would be appreciated to the Katie McBride Foundation.
