OBITUARY
EWALD MICHAEL KARBINER, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2025. He was 82 years old. Affectionately known as “Ed,” Ewald was born on October 1, 1942 in Sekitsch, Yugoslavia. After surviving the turmoils of World War II and after, Ed emigrated to the United States at 7 years old with his family, settling in Ridgewood, Queens, NY. In his youth, he loved to play stick ball in the neighborhood, sneak in to watch the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field and find odd jobs like “soda jerk” at Forest Park. Ed went on to Brooklyn Technical high school, a regional school for high achievers, where he played Varsity Soccer. He then attended Queens College where he majored in Accounting. In 1967, he was drafted during the Vietnam War and served his country for 2 years. As a young adult, Ed loved dancing at Martin’s and the Clubhouse, swimming at Rockaway beach, skiing in the Catskills, waterskiing in Lake George and driving his convertible VW Karmann Ghia. One day, Ed met Mary Ann Tomitz at Rockaway beach with friends, and the rest was history. Ed and Mary Ann settled in New Hyde Park and were happily married for 54 years. Ed had a long and prosperous career in Accounting. He began in public accounting for Touché Ross, then private accounting for Integrated Resources and, lastly, private equity work for Cheslock, Bakker & Associates. He loved his daily commute to NYC on the Long Island Railroad and his walks to work in Manhattan. Although Ed often joked that accounting was not super exciting, he loved to volunteer his time and prepare people’s taxes. Outside of work, Ed’s passions were boating and fishing, a hobby he enjoyed to the fullest. He loved spending time in Southold, on the North Shore of LI, surf casting off the beach or dropping a line from his prized Grady White, the “MaryLee.” He was always in pursuit of the next great catch and the perfect sunset. Ed also loved to cook, making the best chicken ghoulash, grilled pork chops and bratwurst soup. He was a very handy person who loved tackling projects around the house. Ed enjoyed keeping busy by traveling, playing golf, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Ed is survived by his wife Mary Ann, son Kevin (daughter-in-law Kathy), daughter Lisa (son-in-law Mike), grandson Kevin and granddaughters Courtney, Marcella and Adeline.
