1945 - 2026

Catherine Tucker Nyhus died on September 12, 2026, with her sons by her side, after a courageous battle with Vascular dementia. She was born in County Cork, Ireland, the youngest child of Paul and Julia Sullivan Kingston. Her father passed away 1 week before her birth, and her twin sister, Anna, sadly died in infancy. Cathy and her brother, Danny, were adopted by extended family, Augusta “Pat” and Thomas Tucker, and raised in New Hyde Park, New York.

She graduated from Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park and was a lifelong parishioner of the Church of the Holy Spirit in New Hyde Park.

In 1967, Catherine married the love of her life, Dennis Nyhus. Together they built a family and raised three children. Catherine devoted herself to her family while also building a long, successful career. Before her children were born, she worked on Wall Street, and after she raised her children, she enjoyed 17 years with Citrus and Allied Essences Ltd. in Floral Park, New York, where her communication and organizational skills were essential. In later years, Cathy worked as a customer supervisor at Casual Corner Annex in Hicksville, New York, where she enjoyed working with customers and helping with the store's day-to-day operations.

Catherine was a woman of deep faith, and the Church of the Holy Spirit in New Hyde Park remained an important part of her life. For a time, she worked as the church’s office secretary, where she organized meetings and activities and helped prepare church presentations and special ceremonies. She also served as President and Treasurer of the Rosary Society, giving her time and talents generously to her parish community.

Catherine and Dennis eventually retired and moved to Dennis’ hometown of Hendricks, Minnesota, where they enjoyed a brief retirement together. They especially enjoyed traveling and making memories before Dennis’s passing in 2000.

Catherine experienced profound loss throughout her life, including the deaths of her husband, Dennis; her son, Dennis, in infancy; her daughter, Erin, in childhood; her parents; and her siblings, Joan, Sheila, George, Paddy, Marian, Paul, and Danny.

Catherine is survived by her sons, Kevin of Pennsylvania and Brian of New York, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends in the United States and Ireland. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Cathy’s family would like to thank the staff at Atria of Levittown, NY, for all the care and devotion to her for many years. They also extend their gratitude to Hospice Inn of Melville for their guidance and support.

In Lieu of flowers please consider making donations in Catherine's honor too:
