Brother Richard Hartz was a brilliant educator and superb director of development and alumni affairs. We are all in his debt. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed. Rest in peace.
Richard McCarrick
It was only when I received the Chaminade magazine on July 3, 2025, that I learned of Bro. Richard's passing. Dick and I had been friends since we started at Chaminade together in September, 1955. We studied German together under the inimitable Bro. George Siegwarth, S.M. Dick and I stayed in touch with Christmas greetings each year in German. I often told Dick he was a saint. He brushed off the comment every time. But in my book, one who devotes his life without reservation to Mary, the Mother of Jesus, educates young men in wisdom for decades, and models a holy life before faculty, staff, students and alumni has earned the title. Dick, my friend, rest in peace…
Well done, good and faithful servant.
Brother Hartz was my German professor at Chaminade over 50 years ago. I've followed his ministry ever since and have always marveled at his devotion and lifetime dedication to God, to Chaminade and to all of its students. I heard about his passing while out of the country, and was saddened I wouldn't be able to attend his services. What a wonderful man, and what a huge loss for the Chaminade Family. Ted Krebsbach, Class of 1971
Bro. Hartz taught me (class of '69), and two of my brothers, German for three years, and issued my first and only demerit slip. I have a great memory of meeting Bro. Hartz in Berlin summer 1980 on his annual trip with Chaminade students. He was a good, loyal, sincere human being, and his passing is a big loss for us.
