Florence Lisanti

11/4/1927 - 6/26/2019 OBITUARY First Woman Trustee for the Village of New Hyde Park Florence Lisanti was born in Crown Heights, Brooklyn and spent her young adult years in Queens Village. She devoted decades to her community in the Incorporated Village of New Hyde Park, where she thrived as a public servant, neighbor, and friend. Her years of service began as president of the PTA at Hillside Grade School, NHP Memorial, and Nassau County PTA Council. In the early 90s, she won her first term as Village Trustee, becoming the first woman to hold that office for the Village of New Hyde Park. Florence was instrumental in beginning the Village Street Fair in 1995, an annual event held on Jericho Turnpike. In her second term as Trustee, she also served as Deputy Mayor. These trailblazing accomplishments are a testament to the high regard that her colleagues and constituents held for her work. In her final role in local politics, she enjoyed being the town historian, receiving citations of appreciation for her service and dedication. She was diligent in preserving the history of New Hyde Park through historical photos, videos, and clippings that are still in the Village Hall and the NHP Museum. To each of these roles, Mrs. Lisanti brought energy, innovation, and commitment to the common good of her village that she loved so much. Florence was the face of New Hyde Park for many decades. Her term as president of the Chamber of Commerce was so appreciated that this organization named their Award for Outstanding Citizenship after her. Because of her work with the PTA, she was recipient of their lifetime achievement award. Additional honors include North Hempstead Woman of the Year (2000) and the 7th Senatorial District Woman of Distinction (2010). She was also active in Board of Elections and various organizations (noise abatement, conservation of water, etc.). In addition to her civic roles, she was a caring wife, mother, and grandmother. She never failed to encourage her family to grow and pursue their work to the best of their abilities. Florence Lisanti is survived by her three daughters and their husbands: Diane Lisanti, Geri Lisanti-Levy and Richard Levy, Laura and Jeff Yohe; and her grandchildren, Joshua and Andrea Yohe, and Alessandra and Paul Levy. She is preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Gerald Lisanti. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org) can be made.
