Angela Powers

1939 - 2015

Angela has worked in the private and public sector since 1957. She has worked in the banking industry, the service industry, as well as in county and town government. At the same time she dedicated herself to family, friends, community, god and country. Angela successfully raised three children while working for various private and public entities, at times, holding several jobs to support her family. She has always lent a helping hand to friends and numerous community organizations over the past six decades. Angela is devoted to her church and supports programs that help those who strive to help themselves. Her love of country is evidenced in her political involvement and patriotic advocacy over the past five decades. Though retiring from the workforce, Angela will continue her community and political involvement and, of course, her love for singing wonderful patriotic, religious and classical songs for all to enjoy.

Angela has been a rock of Stewart Manor-New Hyde Park community from the 1960’s to this very day. She began by welcoming newcomers to our community, as a Welcome Wagon International Hostess, bringing young families up to speed on our fine community organizations, schools, and businesses. Businesses like Umberto’s, Nuzzi Fuel, and many others throughout the community. Her successes lead her to become the first female president of the Greater New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce. Angela was involved in all facets of the New Hyde Park Road School and New Hyde Park Memorial High School P.T.A.’s. She was a key fundraiser for the 25th Anniversary of Memorial High School and served on the Village of NHP Parks Commission. Angela has been active in politics for over five decades.

Angela is proud of her continuing service to the Greater New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce as an active board member. She played a pivotal role in the creation of the Chamber Charitable Fund that supports local causes throughout our community. Angela has served as the Corresponding Secretary for the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce and was its small business person of the year in 2000. Angela serves our country as a member of the Selective Service Board of the United States of America.

Angela served as chairwoman for the American Heart Association, taught religious instruction at Holy Spirit Church, where she was president of the Rosary Alter Society and a member of the Parish Council. She is a member of the Stewart Manor Lions, and a former member of the Elmont Kiwanis Club and Garden City Park Pinto Lioness Club. She is a member of the Cellini Lodge #2206 Order of Sons of Italy in America and the Dante Society. She was instrumental in the construction of the Italian Discovers Monument located on the New Hyde Park Village Green.

Angela’s five decades of service to the Republican Party includes all the work committee men and women do to elect and re-elect our candidates. She has run numerous candidate headquarters and campaigns. To this day, she gathers signatures, distributes literature, stuffs envelopes, makes phone calls, covers candidate railroad stops, and makes personal contact with the voters. She has served as president of the Nassau County Federation of Republican Women as well as chairwoman for the towns of Hempstead and North Hempstead. She has served as 10th Judicial District Director for the New York State Federation of Republican Women. Angela serves as the female member for the 19th Assembly District to the New York Republican State Committee. She has been a distinguished and top performer as Executive Committeewoman of the Stewart Manor-New Hyde Park Republican Committee for the past twenty years.

Angela loves to sing. She was classically trained by singer and Coral Director Anna C. LaPula of the Metropolitan Opera of New York. She attended St. Joseph’s Parochial School, and sang at Cathedral High School, for the Glee Club and Orchestra, and at St. John’s University, making her way to singing at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and many famous supper clubs throughout Manhattan. She was a member of the Schola Contorum Choir of the Brooklyn Diocese, where she sang at many of the churches – in the borough of a thousand churches – often with her young son Edward in tow. Of course, parishioners of Holy Spirit have heard her wonderful voice over the years. Members of various political and community organizations have heard her wonderful renditions of our National Anthem and God Bless America. Her voice is true to form to this very day.

In the mid 1980’s, Angela proudly served as Assistant Director Office of Housing & Intergovernmental Affairs for Nassau County. In 1988 she went on to serve as Hempstead Town’s Special Assistant to the Water Commissioner and was promoted to Deputy Commissioner Department of Water. Later on she proudly served as 1st Deputy Commissioner Department of Senior Enrichment until her retirement in early 2014. She cherishes her town friends and co-workers.

Angela is a proud mother of three to Edward, Diane and Bruce. In retirement, she enjoys her grandchildren Danny, Matthew and Brian. There are no signs of her slowing down. As she is fond of saying, “When I was born, my father wanted a son; so, he made me a general.” A compassionate, determined, and loyal general she is.
