Arthur G. McCann

October 24, 1949 - April 18, 2018

OBITUARY

Arthur McCann was born in 1949 in the Bronx.  He is the oldest of 5 children, and is survived by his 3 sisters Marion Zolna, Tricia McCann and Kathy McKenna, as well as his mother Margaret ("Peggy") McCann.  He is predeceased by his father Arthur McCann and his brother John McCann.

Arthur married Maryalice McCann nee Corrigan and they had two children, Matthew and Kathryn.  He is survived by his wife, son and daughter, daughter-in-law Melissa McCann nee Gosdzinski and two grandchildren, John Malachy McCann and Andrew Arthur McCann.  He was very close with his daughter's fiancee, James Dixon, and Kathryn and James will be married in November 2018.

Arthur was a kid from the Bronx made good.  He received his Ph D. in Educational Psychology from Fordham University in 1984.  During his over 45 year career in education, he was a Catholic Elementary School Teacher, a Catholic High School Guidance Counselor and Director of Guidance (Holy Cross High School in Queens, New York), Public High School Director of Guidance for 30 years (Great Neck North High School), Adjunct Professor (C.W. Post, NYIT, College of New Rochelle and Manhattan College) and Chair of Counseling Department and Director of School Counseling at the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences (Mercy College).

Arthur was an active parishioner at both St. Gregory the Great in Bellerose and St. Anne's in Garden City over the last 35 years.  He & Maryalice together led pre-Cana groups & were involved in parish faith formation and social ministry.  He also lectored and volunteered his counseling services and coached CYO and intramural sports. After 9/11, Arthur worked with the FDNY's Counseling Services Unit counseling FDNY and EMS workers and their families.

Arthur spent summers with his family at the West Oak Recreation Club in Oakdale, New York, of which he was an active Board member.  He enjoyed sailing, kayaking, running, biking, swimming, hiking, cross-country skiing and playing basketball, all at different points in his life.  He was a fan of the Yankees and whatever teams his son and daughter were on.

Arthur and Maryalice celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary this past February.  He was a kind & generous man, who shared freely of his wisdom, time & guidance with many family members, fellow parishioners and the NYC community at large, during his lifetime.  In addition to having his own loving siblings and parents, he was very close with his inlaws, who thought of him like a son and brother.

He will be missed dearly.
