Dennis Demetropoulos

1928 - 2021

OBITUARY

Dennis Demetropoulos was born in Amalias, Greece on March 19, 1928. He was baptized on the Greek island of Zakynthos at the Cathedral of Saint Dionysios (Dennis) where he was given the name of the church.

He came to the United States at 9 years old where he worked with his father selling flowers in the Wall Street district. Even though he was a child, he liked working and even told the story that firemen taught him how to go down the fire pole at the local firehouse. He was always happy telling that story.

He was drafted in 1950 and thereafter deployed to Korea to fight in the Korean War where he was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division-Artillery. His war stories were always touching and painful to him and he always talked about them. During his army tenure, he was promoted to Master Sergeant and served as a reservist for 5 years.

After the army, he opened up his own flower shop but then made a career change to the maritime industry, where he immensely enjoyed working in. This job afforded him the opportunity to travel around the world to many places such as the Middle East, Far East and South America.

He met Mary Gotsis and it was love at first sight. They married on June 14, 1953. They were married for 41 years and after her passing, always reminisced about their lives together.

He is survived by his two daughters, Angie and Denise, younger brother Jimmy and his three grandchildren, Elliot, Denny, and Mary, whom he deeply loved and adored.
